Preserv in pictures

How has the Preserv project evolved over two phases? One simple overview is illustrated by the schematics that have been published and presented during the project.

A practical approach! These are the actual components of a system set up to test the smart storage approach. In this context it's a partial schematic. This does not elaborate the storage options and interfaces, but instead focusses on retrieving and examining the formats of stored content. The storage component assumes a greater role, and the range of services expands to include scheduling and interoperability services such as OAI-ORE, potentially discovered and accessed through online registries of services. The interface between repository and storage is now mediated by a controller.

The interfaces and services have been specified in a little more detail. We start introducing Web services, and preservation services follow the 'seamless flow' approach of The National Archives: characterisation, planning and action. Our interfaces and components are broadly (un)defined. It looks much like the OAIS model, a happy coincidence! Our notional control valve provides scope for input from stakeholders.
